Overview

  • The purpose of this position is to assist loan officers and underwriters by reviewing, analyzing, recommending structure, preparing loan packages, and obtaining government guaranties on small business loans, including 7(a) guaranty, 504 and programs offered through state agencies.
  • In addition, the position is responsible for marketing, educating, encouraging, and assisting loan officers and underwriters with various government loan programs to reduce risk for bank while providing financing for business loan customers.
  • Position involves assuring compliance with bank government policy in loan approval, servicing, liquidation, and purchase of government loan guaranty.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and market government loan programs to Trustmark lenders, underwriters, and customers regarding various government loan programs available in order to grow the Government Loans portfolio. Promote government loans programs as requested to external organizations including chambers, small business seminars, etc.
  • Consult with underwriters, commercial bankers, and Credit Administration on government loan requests to determine eligibility and compliance with various governmental agencies’ standard operating policies and procedures. Recommend structure of loans utilizing state and federal government programs. Increase awareness of CRA credit.
  • Underwrite SBA loans in accordance with bank policy and procedures. Analyze credit worthiness by collecting, reviewing, and analyzing supporting documents needed for submission to government agencies such as management resumes, personal and business tax returns, personal and business financial statements, business plans, financial projections, credit bureau reports, etc. Prepare cash flows, including ratios such as Current Ratio, Debt to Tangible Net Worth, Debt Service Coverage Ratio, etc. Verify and document all required equity injections.  Order, document and review IRS transcripts, Sams, Caivrs, and if applicable INS verification.
  • Make recommendations of approval or denial to proper loan authority, including write ups of credit memorandums for internal committees or agency reviews.
  • Prepare loan application package and loan authorization for submission to government agency.
  • Monitor monthly delinquencies.
  • Approve and coordinate guaranty purchase and/or workout of problem loans. This may involve recommending a restructuring of debt, liquidating collateral. Prepare and submit purchase package.
  • Manage Government Loan Portfolio Specialist (GLPS) by providing direction and assistance to the associate in performing duties of that position. Serve as back-up, when needed, to approve and review servicing actions and disbursement requests.
  • Perform additional duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Four-year college degree in business related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 5 years of SBA underwriting experience. Must possess a thorough knowledge of SBA lending rules, regulations, and practices, including experience with SBA’s ETRAN application portal and preparation of SBA 7A and 504 loans
  • Minimum 5 years credit experience in small business and/or commercial lending, including credit analysis
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, etc.
  • Attention to detail and excellent multi-tasking skills
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Negotiating skills

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:  Must be able to sit for long periods of time and use computer keyboard/or mouse, while viewing computer screens.
